What domain status (EPP) codes mean

The "Status" field in the lookup result shows standard EPP (Extensible Provisioning Protocol) status codes defined by ICANN. Multiple codes often appear together. A client prefix means the registrar set it; a server prefix means the registry set it directly.

Status codeMeaning
clientTransferProhibitedTransfer to another registrar is blocked โ€” applied by default on most domains to prevent mistakes or theft
clientDeleteProhibitedDeletion is blocked โ€” prevents accidental removal
clientUpdateProhibitedRegistration data updates are blocked โ€” must be lifted before changing nameservers or contacts
okNo restrictions โ€” normal status
pendingDeletePending deletion โ€” past the grace period after expiration, soon to be deleted and released
redemptionPeriodRedemption period โ€” a window after expiration/deletion when the original owner can still restore the domain

FAQ

Is this different from the traditional whois protocol?
Yes. It uses RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol), the modern standard that returns structured JSON.
Can every domain be looked up?
Not always โ€” some registries don't support RDAP or only disclose limited information, so some data may be unavailable.
Why don't I see the registrant's name or email?
Under GDPR and similar privacy regulations, most registrars have redacted personal registrant data from RDAP responses since 2018. Corporate or organizational domains sometimes still disclose some of this information.
Is the lookup data stored?
No. Every request is looked up immediately and only the result is returned.
